Description
The BACCHAE is an electrifying Greek tragedy by Euripides, which originally premiered shortly after his death in 405 B.C.E. The play centers around the proud and charismatic god of wine, Dionysus, and his reverent group of followers:
the Bacchants. Threatened by their disregard for societal norms and gender roles, the king of Thebes denies Dionysus's godhood and seeks to destroy the Bacchants' freedom and sacred, ecstatic rituals. In return, Dionysus shows him the bloody truth of what it means to deny the identity of a god.
